A Pre-Task

Here is a task I was given prior to starting my work. I had to attempt to create a flip-book using 100 post-it notes in order to create a 4 second animation. This is the outcome...

An Animated Adaption..

For this Project I was given the story of The Pied Piper to create an animated webcomic out of. I worked in a group with two classmates, Nicole and Mike, and we split the project up into three parts. I was tasked to create the beginning portion of the story across four pages and then Animate it using MotionArtist.

On this page you'll find all the work that led to the creation of the comic and the final outcome.

Here are the two Moodboards I compiled after I first got together with Mike and Nicole. Our initial ideas were that we wanted to change the original tale, as we all found it rather boring. Our Piper was to be a woman called Piper who played the flute and lured the drunken Rats, who party in town, out. She has an evil rat friend called Edgar who helps her conspire against her cheating Mayor husband. We also decided we wanted to go with a Celtic feel to the story and that Piper was to have fiery orange hair and yellow eyes. Initially this was going to be because she was magic. Upon development, she has no magic, she's just a gal who's had enough of being a cuckold...

Planning And Sketchbook work

For a final rough design, we decided that Piper should look a lot softer and a little more normal. We went with Ginger hair since we were going with a Celtic-feel. To compliment this, we chose the colour scheme red and yellow for her clothing. Additionally, this would make her stand out. The use of red and yellow links back to the 'pied' part of the original Pied Piper.

Edgar, we knew, always needed to look evil, hence the eyepatch. Across these pages the only thing that has changed in his design is that he's gotten fatter. Additionally, he is a brown rat whereas the rest of the rats where to be grey or white etc.

After our initial team meeting, we decided that a Celtic-feel would work best for our story. In my initial planning sketches, I've tried to incorporate Celtic fashion.

These first two pages were just the first sketches that came to mind when thinking about our version of The Pied Piper. I thought that Piper could've been a witch hence her slightly more evil looking appearance here.

Ned, as named by Mike and myself, needed to look sleazy. I referred a lot to my moodboard for his clothing as I couldn't really decide how I wanted to have him look. We settled on a black waistcoat and blue cravat. In addition to this we gave him mutton chops to suit the vague time period we're setting it in. When he's stripped down to his little heart underwear, I thought it would be funny to give him an 'I heart mum' tattoo.

The Animated Outcome...

Here is the completed animation. This was created using motion artist. I chose to work by doing the camerawork first as this gave me an idea of how long each panel was on screen for and therefore I could time the animations. The camera was the more fiddly to work with on this software in my opinion. I also chose to have music and voice acting in my animation. Both Mike and I took to acting all the characters across our two parts of the story. I'm really pleased with the final outcome!
